The Client
Bermuda is a British overseas territory based in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Comprising 138 Islands, Main Island, or Bermuda, is a thriving finance centre, with one of the highest GDP in the world. It also has a sub-tropical climate with warm weather all year round and a very high standard of living.
The Firms
Bermuda is dominated by two firms – Conyers Dill and Pearman and Appleby. Both offshore giants practice a mix of corporate, finance, trusts, litigation and funds. Insurance and in particular, captive insurance, is also a major practice area for these firms and as an industry, for the island itself.
Remuneration
Salaries range from US $140,000 for a lawyer with four years’ relevant post qualification experience, to US $250,000 for senior associates. Partners’ profits are also comparable to City law firms. Personal tax is just under 5%.
Entry Requirements
All non-Bermudians require a work permit to reside and work in Bermuda. Bermudian law is based on English law, so in order to practice as a Attorney, you must be qualified in a commonwealth jurisdiction. There are no exams to be taken in order to be admitted in Bermuda.
Lifestyle
The quality of life is excellent in Bermuda. The islands boast a well established infrastructure and a high standard of schooling and healthcare. There are a number of excellent sports facilities, including a number of golf clubs and a rugby club which hosts players from around the world at the annual Bermuda Classic rugby tournament.
Accommodation is more expensive than London, with most people renting. However the commute times are minimal and the cost of other items, such as groceries compares favourably to onshore centres.
