Hogan & Hartson

“Washington DC giant Hogan & Hartson has launched a mainstream UK litigation practice with the hire of Rod Baker from Stephenson Harwood (SH).

Baker will become the first UK-qualified litigation partner in the US firm’s 45-fee earner City firm and the 19th partner in London overall when he arrives on 15 March [2005].

The move is a notable shift for Hogan as the top 50 US firm has referred a sizeable amount of contentious work to UK advisers in recent years.  Last year alone it is believed to have outsourced around £5m worth of litigation work.

…The firm becomes one of a handful of US firms to branch into the UK litigation market with Latham & Watkins recently hiring two senior UK partners to launch its own practice…”

The Requirement
Head of UK Litigation

This was a new instruction from this global player for which litigation is a core practice area across the firm. The Brief was to source for them a high profile commercial litigation specialist to establish a London practice, servicing the UK, Western and Eastern Europe (including Russia).

Presentation of the detailed research report elicited an initial target list of ten individuals, from which a clear front-runner was identified very early on. Over several months of careful nurturing, it was clear that both sides were growing ever more excited by the opportunity and, to our mutual delight (!), an offer was negotiated which our candidate could not (and did not) refuse. He has since grown his team to three fee-earners.
